Dick Morris, former Clinton advisor, has some interesting thoughts on the possible result of Bush's falling polls:

The lower Bush drops, the more likely it is that Hillary Clinton runs for president in 2004. She and her husband cannot permit a Democrat not named Clinton to beat Bush in '04. If one does, she can't run in '08 against an incumbent Democratic president. She'd have to wait until 2012, by which time she would be 65 and out of the White House for 12 years. The weaker Bush gets, the more likely a Hillary Clinton candidacy becomes.

Hey Burma ;)

I came across your site by accident while searching for links to that creativeloafing article. Your's was the top match on Google for some reason. So I added you to the list ;)

Oh, and I don't think its a strawman. Morris makes very good points. Hillary wants to run - and win - in 2008. If there's a chance that Bush collapses and another Democrat gets a real chance at the election, I think it's possible that she would step in. This isn't neccesarily a bad thing either. Sure she'd motivate the Republican base, but they're already motivated, as demonstrated by the last few election cycles. We need something to get the Democratic base mobilized, and I really don't think Dean is it unless he pulls something out of his hat. He's pretty good at convincing Greens that they're Democrats though ;)

the Green camp seems to be set in their "states first" strategy; that is, running only canidates in local and state elections and throwing their weight behind the dems for the presidential race. Maybe this will soothe w0zz's hatred for the greens ;)

"The Green Party emerged from a national meeting over the weekend increasingly certain that it will run a presidential candidate in next year's election, all but settling a debate within the group over how it should approach the 2004 contest."

Whatever Hillary is thinking... the whole 'Hillary is going to run' thing is a convenient way for Rush Windbag and Sean Hassnomindity to trivialize the current Democratic lineup while whipping up the true believers into a frenzy.

Plus it buys into that whole 'the Clinton's marriage is only a political arrangement' argument.

Now go out and trash some Greens.

w0zz said:

The Clinton's marriage IS only a political arrangement. That should be obvious to everyone by now ;)

oh yeah, what WAS I thinking....

Your points about having to wait until 2012 are well taken -- and pretty much erase any doubt in my mind (save another scandal) that she'll run in the next election. To your point, there is NO (serious) candidate that will energize the Democratic party like Hillary. As for likewise energizing conservative voters against her -- well that may happen, but Bill was elected twice and almost a third time in the form of the cardboard cut-out Al Gore. I'd say her odds are pretty good.
