Colorado Votes 2003

For those of you in Colorado, don't forget to get your ballots in by the 4th. Most of the larger counties are using mail-in ballots only, so you need to get it in the mail soon (by Saturday) or, if you're in Denver, drop it off.

My recomendations?

State: No on Referendum A, Amendment 32 and Amendment 33.
Denver: No on Intiative 101
Yes on Referred Questions 1A, 3A and 3B

Don't like my recommendations and want some more info to make your own decision? Check out the sample ballot or click through the links above to check out the Rocky Mountain News' excellent coverage of the issues.

That was how I voted.

It took me a long time to decide on referendum A, Amendment 32, and 33.

on amendment a:
While the drought is certainly a concern, giving the state a blank check is not the way to fix the water problems we have.

on 32:
I don't see why freezing residential property taxes at 8% will really help. This needs to be flexible in order to accomodate the economic cycles the city will go through, and hell, I like the idea that my property taxes could go even lower :)

on 33:
While I have no problems with gambling at ALL, this looks like another case of good idea, bad implementation. And I don't like the fact that the ppl who will be running the gaming machines make almost half the money without lifting a finger, screw that.

Initiative 101: dumb. stupid hippie.

1A, 3A, 3B, good ideas to get this city on track. besides, the Hick told me to vote yes for them, so I did ;)

Did you happen to get a li'l postcard in the mail wozz of a picture from 1978 of the Hick and a cpl friends sitting on a truck in the middle of nowhere?

The caption at the bottom read something like "this was the last time we voted on X issue" . I don't remember exactly for which Reffered question it was addressing.

Anyway, the picture was hilarious. The Hick was this skinny SKINNY white guy with loooong hippie hair. Funny stuff.

I like the *idea* of Amendment 32. The Gallagher Amendment holding down residential property taxes, plus TABOR limiting government spending and revenues, plus Amendment 23 requiring the state to spend more on schools each year is not sustainable. There's a bit of an explanation of the issue here, but I'm looking for more for my own edification.. Something has to give. I think the place to start looking though is TABOR. There's some talk of convening a constitutional convention to look at fixing this situation, since the legislature can't get it done.

And no, I didn't see that postcard. Do you still have it?
